Thursday Letter 2.06.22

Dear Parents,

Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) Discover Science and Maths Award

We are delighted to announce that our school has been awarded the 'Plaque of STEM' (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) for all our hard work and participation in this year's SFI Discover Primary Science and Maths Awards. The whole school took on this challenge and participated in a range of Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Show and Tell activities throughout the year. We received very positive feedback from the judges and are delighted that all the students' hard work paid off. We look forward to continuing and furthering the promotion of STEM in our school. Check out our Facebook page for some photos.

Here is some feedback on our Log of Evidence:

Well done to all the learners in St Mary's BNS, Lucan on the great work you have done at STEM during the year. Your log was was a pleasure to review - full of clearly illustrated explanations on the broad range of activities you engaged with. I particularly like the involvement of your Principal encouraging interest in Science and Space with his daily jokes, riddles, and fun facts called out over the intercom to all classes. I was also impressed with your work in the Engineering section and your development of many of the skills needed in the field of Engineering - measurement, prediction, testing and drawing to scale.
Congratulations - you are worthy recipients of the DPSM Plaque - keep up the good work. Maybe you should consider applying for the Badge of Excellence next year - you would enjoy the challenge of the different focus.

We are very grateful to Ms. Whitney for co-ordinating this initiative.

Sport – Hurling, Golf and Athletics

We have had unbelievable success in sport over the past week in hurling, golf and athletics. Please check out our school Facebook page to see images of our boys in action.

Our Senior A hurlers had a great win against St.Colmcille’s in the semi-final of the Division 1 Herald Cup last Thursday in Ballyboden. The boys have qualified for the Herald Cup Final in Croke Park on Wednesday 8th June at 11am. All boys from third to sixth class will travel by bus to the game. Thanks to Mr. Clandillon, Mr. Keegan, Mr. Shanahan and Ms. Ryan for all their help to promote hurling in the school.

Our golfers retained the prestigious Castle Cup in the Castle Golf Club on Monday. Well done to Johnny Donovan (Hermitage Golf Club), Aaron Donohoe (Hermitage Golf Club), James Dillon (Westmanstown Golf Club) and Colm Murphy (Castleknock Golf Club) who played fantastic golf. Art Exhibition – Thursday 9th June from 1.45pm to 8pm

We are holding our Art Exhibition in the school on Thursday 9th June from 1:45pm-8pm. This was an annual event pre-Covid. It takes place in the hall and the downstairs corridors. Each student chooses their favourite piece of Art from the year and these are all displayed throughout. It is a lovely way to celebrate the pupils’ creativity and we encourage parents to take the opportunity to visit the school throughout the evening.

Cake Sale – School Hall – Thursday 16th June from 9am to 2pm

Save the date: The Parents’ Association (PA) is asking you, your boys, the teachers and all the staff at St Mary’s to put on your aprons and bake some cakes. All donations should be brought to the school between 8 and 8.45 a.m. on the day of the bake sale on Thursday 16th June. All parents/guardians and families are welcome to buy and savour treats on the day. The proceeds from the fundraiser will go towards an outdoor play area for our new special class.

Comprehension Strategy, Writing Genre and PE Strand

We are taking a whole school approach to writing genres and comprehension strategies. This month we will focus on ‘Poetry’ as our writing genre. We will be revising all comprehension strategies this month. Our PE strand will be athletics and outdoor adventure.

‘Meet and Greet’ for incoming Junior Infants and their parents – Wednesday 8th June at 2pm

Our incoming Junior Infants and their parents will have an opportunity to meet their new teacher, see their classroom and play with their new classmates on Wednesday 8th June at 2pm. The parents will come to the hall for a presentation while their sons stay in their new classroom to chat and mingle.

Thanks to all the parents who donated money to our Bob-a-Job fundraiser. I am happy to report that we managed to raise €6,600 from our Bob-a-Job fundraiser.
