Dear Parents,
Punctuality
There are a number of boys who are arriving to school late every day. We cannot blame the boys for this, particularly the younger boys, who still rely on their parents to bring them to school on time. I understand that working parents in particular have busy lives and it can be difficult to get the boys out of bed in the morning and feed them and dress them. However, we do ask parents to try to give themselves enough time in the morning so that they can arrive to school at the appropriate time.
Sixth Class tour to wind farm
As part of our Engineer’s Week event held earlier this year, Our sixth class boys went on tour to the wind farm in Mount Lucas in Co. Offaly on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. Catherine from Bord na Móna treated them to an insightful presentation and tour, where the boys got up close and personal with a 150m tall wind turbine.
Rory Mullan’s presentation to sixth class boys
Many thanks to Rory Mullan (father of Senan in Mr. Lynch’s fourth class) for his wonderful presentation to our sixth class boys today. In a follow-up to this week’s wind farm tour, Rory outlined the vast array of engineering projects currently underway or in planning to reach our carbon-neutral targets.
Robbie Kelly – The Ark Children’s Council
The Ark is a dedicated cultural centre for children. Through their work with leading Irish and international artists children can enjoy performances in their unique child-sized theatre, view engaging exhibitions or participate in creative workshops. Robbie Kelly from Ms. Joyce’s fifth class was selected as a member their children’s council and he offers his views and ideas on how this experience can be improved for other children.
Daniel Abbott – Gold medal in u14 1500m
Well done to Daniel Abbott who won a gold medal with Lucan Harriers AC last week in the Dublin Championships in Tallaght. Daniel’s older brother, Conor, represented Ireland recently in athletics too.
Cultural Awareness
Last week we were entertained by some wonderful facts about Egypt from Karas Ramzy (Ms. Murray’s fifth class). Karas received some help and support from his classmates too.
School Hurling
Best of luck to our senior hurling team who play St. Fiachra’s today in Whitehall at 2.45pm. Our Junior A hurlers had a good win over Pius X on Tuesday and our Junior B team played against St. Brigid’s in Foxrock. Many thanks to Mr. Clandillon, Mr. Keegan, Ms. Ryan, Mr. Walsh and Mr. McHugh for giving up so much of their time to train the teams and bring them to their matches.
St Mary’s BNS and Scoil Mhuire GNS Sports Day – Sunday 9th June at 2pm
Save the date: Our School Sports Day 2024 is taking place on our school grounds on Sunday 9th June. It’s always a great community event with lots of fun for everyone attending and this year should be no different.
We’ll be keeping the entry price the same this year, at €15 per family attending and closer to the time you can pay in advance via Aladdin or by cash at the gate on the day.
There’ll be all the usual races for each class group, parents and tiny tots’ races and lots of fun games and inflatables to keep everyone entertained.
The continued growth and success of the Sports Day relies heavily on our parental community volunteering their time for a short period on the day. We’d appeal to all families to give 30 minutes of their time during the day to manage a station. The Sports Day organising committee will be seeking volunteers in mid-May to help out on the day.
First Holy Communion Volunteers
Our Parents’ Association (PA) is looking for volunteers on Saturday the 18th of May to help with serving tea and coffee after this year’s First Holy Communion. It will take place in St Mary’s school hall. We need volunteers between 1-3pm. If anyone is free to help out during that time please contact the school office.
May Bank Holiday
School will be closed tomorrow, Friday 3rd May, and Monday 6th May for the May Bank Holiday. School will reopen on Tuesday 7th May at 9am. I hope everyone enjoys the long weekend.
Le dea-ghuí,
Dara Burke, Principal.
