Dear Parents,
‘Readalong’ Fundraiser – 12th February to 7th March
We are organising a ‘Readalong’ fundraiser which will commence on Monday 12th February. It will be a whole school project and it will last for four weeks, finishing on Friday 8th March. This will coincide with ‘World Book Day’, which takes place on Thursday 7th March.
The children will be encouraged to read as many books as they can in this space of time. It is hoped that the Readalong will improve literacy in our school as well as raising much needed funds.
Each child will be given a Reading Record/Sponsorship card where books read and funds raised will be recorded. Parents/Guardians are asked to sign the record after the child has finished reading each book. The infant classes and first class will not have to record the names of the books, only keep a record of their progress using the format laid out on their cards. Each child will be encouraged to read books that are of interest to him and are appropriate to his reading ability. The younger children may need the help of their parents to read.
The money raised by the children can be paid through Aladdin. Our school secretary will send a payment link to every parent on the final week of Readalong (the week of the 4th March). We ask you to support our Readalong and although we ask for a minimum donation of €5, all donations would be greatly appreciated.
In school, the children will have a chance to read for a set amount of time each day but most of their reading should be done at home. If children are reading a book at home, they should bring it into school to continue reading it in class during the designated time. There will be prizes awarded in each class for the efforts the children make.
We hope that the children will enjoy the Readalong. The emphasis is on how much the children enjoy the books they read, rather than how many books they read.
Attached here is a calendar of activities for the month of Readalong, including activities such as a puppet show for all classes and a writer’s workshop for 3rd – 6th classes.

First Confession for second class boys
There was a meeting for parents last night in the church. The sacrament of reconciliation for the boys in second class will be between 7pm to 8pm on Monday 19th February in St Mary's Church. If you missed the meeting and would like to find out more please contact Cathy Burke in St. Mary’s Parish Church. All boys are asked to wear their school uniform with their green jumper on the night. We will lend the boys a school tie for their First Confession so the boys will need to wear a white shirt with collar for their tie. The school uniform is not required for their First Communion.
Computer coding for fifth and sixth class for term two
Computer coding for fifth and sixth class recommenced for term two this week. Our school secretary set up an online payment link of €20 for each boy last week. A reminder payment link was sent to parents who have not made this payment yet.
Thank you to Tidy Towns
A big thank you to the wonderful volunteers from Lucan Tidy Towns who came down to the school to clear out our planting beds on Saturday morning. Volunteers are also going to repair the pallet beds this week and prepare them for planting in the springtime. Thank you to the boys and their families who also helped out on Saturday morning. Lucan Tidy Towns are always looking for volunteers. They meet on Saturday mornings at 10am. Please contact them on Facebook if you are interested in joining them any week. We are very grateful to Ms. Killane for helping out and to Ms. Murray for organising this initiative.
Cultural Awareness
Last Friday we were entertained by some wonderful music and facts about Japan. Kenneth Callan (Ms. Murray’s fifth class) gave us some interesting facts about Japan. We look forward to hearing about the culture, history and language of Nepal tomorrow.
Table Tennis
Team II (Daniel Abbott, Conor Crowley, Adam O’Donnell & Matthieu Higgins-Portet) were in action three times this week. On Tuesday, they travelled to St Pat’s, Drumcondra to face St Pat’s Team I. They fought bravely but lost out to a very strong side. On Wednesday, they hosted St Ronan’s, Deansrath in a return league fixture and secured a win. Today, they travelled to Terenure College to play the next round of the cup.
Team III (Peichiu Liu, Sam O’Brien, Finn O’Sullivan & Ruairí Dowling) also travelled to Drumcondra on Tuesday morning to face St Pat’s. They too lost out against St Pat’s Team II who lead the division.
Thanks again to Mr. Clandillon and Mr. Lynch for all their help with our table tennis teams.
Lucan Youth Fun - First two weeks in July

February Midterm – School closed on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February
Our school will be closed on Thursday 15th and Friday 16th February for our February midterm break. School will finish at the normal time of 1.40pm for Infants and 2.40pm for boys from first to sixth class next Wednesday 14th February.
