21-October-24

Dear Parents,

Calendar of school events

Attached is the St Mary's Calendar of School Events for the current academic year. St Mary's staff, in collaboration with the Parents' Association, have an extensive and varied series of events / initiatives planned, as you can see. Today, each family has been sent a hard-copy of the Calendar of School Events in their son’s school bag. We hope that this hard copy is of use to our students and their families, allowing them to become more aware of all the goings-on across our brilliant school. Furthermore, it gives a valuable insight into what can hopefully be covered with our new School Fundraising Model (€100 or €150 contribution). Of course there will be some unforeseen alterations and even the addition of new initiatives, etc. but it is our intention to proceed as planned on the calendar provided.

Wellbeing Survey

We are evaluating the area of Wellbeing in our school and your views are very important to us. Thanks to all of you who completed the first SPHE survey two weeks ago. We would be grateful if you could fill in this survey. All responses will be anonymous. Closing date for the survey is 18th October 2024. Thanks to Ms. Geraghty for organising these surveys. Please access the survey by clicking on the following link:

Anti-Bullying Policy

The Board of Management reviews the Anti-Bullying Policy every year. This updated policy was uploaded on our school website today.

Cultural Awareness

We are very proud of the diverse population in St. Mary’s BNS. Every Friday we invite boys who have parents from a certain heritage to give a few facts about their country and read a poem in that language over the school intercom. Last week we were delighted to welcome Jazim, Noel, Gavin and Thomas from sixth class who gave us some interesting facts about India and read poems in Malayalam and Hindi. We look forward to hearing some interesting facts about Pakistan tomorrow.

Parking on Chapel Hill

We have received some complaints about parents parking on the footpath on Chapel Hill. Parents with buggies and prams are unable to walk on the path and some boys have had to cycle on the road in order to navigate around some of these cars. Please consider parking in the Church car park and walking down the steps when collecting your son.

Free Nasal Flu Vaccine – Remaining classes will be vaccinated today

The remaining older classes who were given consent all received their free Nasal Flu vaccine yesterday.

Shoelaces

There are a number of boys in our school who are unable to tie shoelaces. Many of these boys are running around the school yard and walking up the stairs which is a health and safety hazard. Please continue to use Velcro shoes if your son is unable to tie his own laces.

Best of luck to Mr. Walsh

Lucan Sarsfilelds Senior Hurlers have qualified for the senior hurling division 1 County semi-final against Kilmacud Crokes this Sunday 13th October in Parnell Park at 2pm. There are many past pupils involved including Mr. Walsh who plays corner back. We would like to wish Mr. Walsh and all our other past pupils the best of luck on Sunday.

Gaelic Football

Hard luck to our Junior football teams who put up a good fight against Pius X on Tuesday. Best of luck to our senior B team who play St. Laurence’s BNS Stillorgan in Lucan Sarsfields today.

Our fourth class footballers played a football blitz in Lucan Sarsfields yesterday. Our senior footballers will play there next Wednesday. Thanks to all the parents who provided lifts to and from the games.

Thanks to Mr. Shanahan, Mr. Walsh, Ms. Ryan and Mr. O’Brien for training our football teams at lunch break and for organising their fixtures.

Athletics

Well done to all the boys from our school who represented Lucan Harriers Athletic Club in the cross country last Sunday in the Phoenix Park. They included Ethan Small, Michael Kilcullen, Paul Bastable, Stephen Abbott, David Abbott, Conor Manweiler and Callum Byrne. Please check our school Facebook page to see some photos of the event.

Le dea-ghuí,

Dara Burke, Principal.
