Dear Parents,
First Holy Communion
Well done to our second class boys who made their First Holy Communion on Saturday in St. Mary’s Church. Thanks to Ms. Staunton, Mr. Walsh and Mr. Shannon for all their hard work preparing the boys for their big day. We are very grateful to our choir for their lovely performance that really enhanced the ceremony. Thanks to Aideen Cooney, Ms. Hunston and Mr. McHugh for all their guidance and support. Many thanks to our Parents’ Association who provided teas, coffees and light refreshments in our school after the ceremony. We appreciate all the effort by our school caretaker, Donie Gaire, for hanging up the colourful bunting and for sorting out our window sill boxes. Thanks to Robert Norris for replanting our hanging baskets.
St Mary’s Boys and Scoil Mhuire Girls National School’s Sports Day – Sunday 9th June at 2pm
Our School Sports Day 2024 is taking place in the school grounds on Sunday 9th June. It’s always a great community event with lots of fun for everyone attending, and this year should be no different!
Entry price remains at €15 per family attending, and a payment link has been set up on Aladdin now to pay in advance. Otherwise it’s cash only at the gate on the day.
There’ll be all the usual races for each class group, parents and tiny tots races and lots of fun games and inflatables to keep everyone entertained all afternoon.
The continued growth and success of the Sports Day relies heavily on our parent community volunteering their time for a short period on the day. We’re appealing to parents who are able to give 30-minutes of their time during the day to manage a station. You can sign up here on Sign Up Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/30E044FAEAA29A2F58-49584236-sports#/
You’ll see all the volunteer stations listed. You’re also able to choose your own station and time slot.

A huge congratulations to hurlers, Matthieu Higgins-Portet and Cathal Moroney, who have been selected to represent Dublin at half-time on the crunch Leinster Senior Hurling Championship game between Dublin and Galway this coming Sunday in Pearse Stadium, Salthill. See our Facebook page for photos of our two hurling stars.
National Scratch Programming Award winner – Gerard Martin
A huge congratulations to Sixth Class pupil, Gerard Martin, who picked up a coveted Judge’s Award at the Scratch National Finals in the University of Limerick last weekend.
Dublin & Roscommon Stars! – St Mary’s BNS
Over the last few months, we’ve loved watching some our past-pupils shine on the inter-county stage in Dublin colours.
Lucan Sarsfield’s Killian Costello and Senan Bolger are making waves in both codes with the Dublin minor hurlers and football. They narrowly lost the Leinster football final to Longford on Tuesday evening but have the enviable opportunity to go one better in hurling this coming weekend in the Leinster hurling final against Kilkenny. Fellow Lucan players, Cian Gavin and Rían Doherty are also on the football squad, whilst Oscar Brennan and Mark Byrne look forward to this weekend’s final with the hurlers.
Last night, Liam Garrigan and Massimo Pappalardo were part of the Dublin hurling team that narrowly lost out to Offaly in the U20 Leinster final in O’Moore Park, Portlaoise. Fellow-Lucan Sarsfields players, Cathal Kennedy and Jack Behan were also part of the team.
The Dublin U19 hurlers had a strong St Mary’s contingent over the course of their U19 Development League campaign. Lucan’s Ryan Clancy captained the squad, with past-pupils Luke Mooney, Conor Dillon, Massimo Pappalardo, Darragh Meehan and Darragh Lyons also involved. Lucan’s Sean O’Neill and Charlie and David Mulqueen were also part of the young squad.
Finally on the Dubs front, good luck to past-pupil Daire Newcombe as he takes on Roscommon with the Dublin senior footballers this coming weekend.
Past-pupil Cathal Geraghty, fresh from his Vincentian of the Year award in Castleknock this week, plays on the hallowed turf of Croke Park this weekend in an U20 B All-Ireland hurling final, when his beloved Rossies take on the Down hurlers.
Utility Bill for 2024/2025
Each year families in St. Mary’s BNS and Scoil Mhuire GNS are asked to pay a utility bill which covers the cost of Aladdin, printing, stationary and arts & crafts. This year the utility bill will be €70 for boys in Junior and Senior Infants and €65 for boys from first to sixth class. There is an extra charge of €5 for infant classes to cover the cost of extra resources for our Aistear programme (play-based programme). Our school secretary sent out a payment link via Aladdin earlier this week.
Cultural Awareness
Well done to Niko Lerotic from Mr. Walsh’s second class for giving us so many interesting facts about Croatia recently on the school intercom. Niko also offered some useful phrases in Croatian.
Le dea-ghuí,
Fintan Clandillon,
Deputy Principal.
